These scales are often also used as sorting scales for gilts (checking the udder). Group animal scales are stationary scales that are used mainly for fattening pigs. Often an entire pen is weighed together. If animal scales are used to select animals for slaughter, the scales can be equipped with a traffic light system to make it easier to sort the animals by weight classes.

Livestock scales are used principally for weighing live animals, in particular large ones, and must therefore meet a number of specific requirements. As animals do not generally want to be weighed, the scales are often equipped with a cage to prevent the animals from escaping. For reasons of hygiene, animal scales are made from high-quality and easy-to-clean materials, such as stainless steel or aluminum. It is also important that the scales are as close to the ground as possible to minimize the risk of animals tripping and injuring themselves.
